Interview with ABKMT Winner - Capt. John Thompson Jr.
The Kingfish Journal spoke with ABKMT tournament winning Capt. John Thompson Jr. today. The team, aboard the Hat Trick, consisted of Capt. John, angler Steve Walton and gaffman Denny Spence. When asked for their secret to pulling in their 57.3 lb. smoker John was succinct, "luck." John said the team decided to enter the tournament to support their good friend, tournament director Eddie Cameron. They didn't have any grand strategic plan, they did what countless kingfisherman do each tournament. It seems lady luck was with them on Friday. They hoped to hit a few inshore spots and do their best. After an uneventful morning they ran back to 4 Mile Rock late in the afternoon. John said the king hit on a ribbonfish on the downrigger set at 37 ft. When asked if this is the biggest king the team had ever caught, John replied, "Oh yea!" Well said. Look for pics of the smoker tomorrow. John, thanks for taking the time to speak to the Kingfish Journal.

News Report on Menhaden in Neuse River with Lesions
The New Bern Sun Journal has an article today about a problem with lesions showing up on menhaden in the Neuse River where a large fish kill occurred in early September. What does menhaden in the Neuse have to do with coastal fishing? Check out this quote from the article, "It may be too early to tell for certain, but it appears to be a real possibility that we will lose all of the menhaden in the Neuse before they are able to migrate to the ocean during October and November... ." Wow!

Where Were the Big Fish From the ABKMT Caught?
Doug Saunders, who goes by the handle "NoRegrets" on Captain Stanman's Forum, provides some interesting details on where the big fish from this week's ABKMT were caught. Seems like he's pieced together info on many of the top finishers. Worth a read. Capt. Stanman also wants to remind all of Saturday's OBSFC Club tournament.

WBKMT Re-scheduled Due to Ivan, New Dates Oct. 28-30

35-foot Triton Center Console?
There's some discussion on The Hull Truth website about plans for a 35' Triton center console. Seems everyone is getting in the game and creating something for serious offshore fisherman. There's nothing on the Triton website about this baby.

How About $100,000 if You Break the NC or SC State Record?
There's an interesting post on Kingfishconnection.com from Tom Hilton of Hilton's Offshore. If you're an SKA member and purchase an annual subscription to Tom's line of fishing charts, you are eligible to win one-hundred grand. But the record-breaker must come during a yet-to-be announced SKA tournament held in North Carolina or South Carolina in 2005. We dropped Tom an e-mail asking for specifics on which tournaments. We'll give you an update when we learn more. In case you're wondering what you have to beat, check this out: NC record, SC record.

Pier King Tournament in Myrtle Beach Cancelled
The 24th annual Fall Pier King Mackerel Tournament scheduled this weekend has been canceled due to a decline in fishing conditions created by recent storms in the area. The tournament, sponsored by the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce and the Grand Strand Fishing Rodeo, was scheduled for today through Sunday on eight area piers. Those who registered may obtain refunds from the pier at which they registered.

First Day Results for the ABKMT
The ABKMT website has unofficial first day results. Looks like quite a few smokers were found. The top five fish are more than 30-lbs. We also saw a report (sorry we forgot where it was) that said there was more than 400 boats registered. If anyone's got more specifics, drop us a line at jeffgrizzel@kingfishjournal.com.

Make-up Dates for WBKMT -- If Necessary...
The tournament committee of the WBKMT has in place a make-up schedule if it becomes necessary to reschedule due to Hurricane Ivan. The official makeup dates for the 2004 WBKMT will be October 28-30. Please remember these are only if it is necessary. The Captain's meeting would be Thursday, fish on Friday and Saturday. They picked these dates to provide the least amount of conflict with other tournaments, availibility of facilities and other resources. They still plan to meet on Monday for the final decision. Check back for final decision.

The Latest on the WBKMT Tourney
Stacy Wester dropped the Kingfish Journal a pro-active e-mail about their upcoming tournament. Check it out. "The committee of the WBKMT is keeping a close eye on the progress of Hurricane Ivan. We expect to make an announcement by 9PM on Monday the 13th as to whether the tournament will go on as scheduled or be moved to October. Please check back here and www.wbkmt.com for the official announcement." Thanks Stacy! Please drop us additional updates as you have them.

Two New Local Tournaments This Month
While down in Carolina Beach for the Labor Day weekend I discovered two new tournaments. The first is The Big Mack KMT being held Sept. 11 and the second is The Carousel Center KMT being held Sept. 25. The Big Mack is a one-day tournament limited to boats 23-foot and under and will be held at the Oceania Marina. The Carousel Center event doesn't appear to have any boat restrictions and will be managed out of the Inlet Watch Yacht Club. Both tourneys have low entry fees and each supports worthy charities. Check out the The Big Mack website for more details. There's nothing about this tournament listed on The Carousel Center's website. But you can e-mail Tournament Director Tom Banks at tbanks@mtsservices.com for more details.

Questions Still Abound as to how Wal-Mart FLW Kingfish Tour Teams will be Determined
This weekend we read a variety of postings on message boards about "invitations" and "eligibility" of various boats and motors. It seems there's one school of thought that only current (as in those owners before the recent announcement) Genmar owners are going to be given priority in the 2005 registration process. Those who elect to purchase/switch over the coming months won't be "eligible" until 2006.

We're going to make another round of calls and e-mails to those involved for clarification. As you know (assuming you read our interview with Irwin Jacobs) we understand that ALL Genmar entries are going to be allowed priority entry over non-Genmar entries. We could be wrong, but we don't think the FLW is going to require those that make the switch to Genmar to hold out for a year.

We think there's some real confusion as to how the term "invitation" is being used. Our guess (and we hate to guess rather than just ask those at the FLW, but we'll hazard one) is that the FLW will send a letter -- or "invitation" if you want to call it that -- to all current Genmar owners they have in their customer files inviting them to participate in the upcoming tour. And yes they'll likely send the initial letter to those on file before the announcement since they most likely won't have recent purchasers info back from their dealers immediately. But I don't think new purchasers have anything to be worried about.

A source in the kingfish community suggested the process might go something like a sports draft: after all the entries are submitted the FLW will take all "old" Genmar owners in the first round, then they'll take all "new" Genmar owners in the second round, the third round might be non-Genmar boats that have Yamaha power and if there's any remaining spots on the roster they'll fill them with non-Genmar, non-Yamaha entries. And as Mr. Jacobs said this will be done within the context of first-come, first-serve.

It was clear from the initial reports and the press release that Genmar boats would receive priority entry. What seems to be happening now is a splitting of hairs. We understand everyone's excitement at the possibilities this tour offers, but everyone needs to take it day by day and all the details will reveal themselves. Please stop back by often as we hope to interview other FLW executives for complete details.

The Kingfishconnection.com Has Added a 'Chat' Feature to Their Site
Dan Peshkin over at Kingfish Connection is always looking for ways to help the kingfishing community connect. While the rest of us were enjoying our weekend, Dan was working hard to integrate a chat room feature into his site. Now you can have a more direct discussion with other Kingfish Connection members. Nice work Dan.

South Brunswick KMT rescheduled for Oct. 22-23
The Chamber of Commerce has made it official, they're going to hold their tournament on October 22-23. This is the same weekend as the Teach's Lair Marina tourney in Hatteras. It seems that going forward, if weather cancels your tournament you're going to have to step on someone's toes when you reschedule.

Rep. Mike McIntyre Pushes Through Shallotte Inlet Dredging Program
Capt. Rube McMullan dropped the Kingfish Journal an e-mail over the weekend with "big news" on the Shallotte Inlet dredging program. It appears the inlet will be dredged in January to aid in navigation with the sand deposited on the local beaches as part of a renourishment program. See the full report on the Ocean Isle Fishing Center website.

Go South Young Man
The Kingfish Journal will be heading down to Carolina Beach, NC for the holiday weekend. Not sure if I'll be able to provide any news for the next couple days. Will be back on Monday with a complete weekend wrap-up. Some subscribers and visitors have already been asking about the Atlantic Beach KMT. I'm going to try and get the latest as soon as possible. But I suspect they're in a holding pattern and will made a prudent decision next week. Good luck to all those from Florida to North Carolina this weekend. Remember -- a boat, house or car can always be replaced, don't risk life or limb in this storm. We want everyone safe and back to fishing soon.

South Brunswick Cancels Tournament But Unsure of New Date, SKA Might Reevaluate Savannah Move
According to the South Brunswick Chamber of Commerce their KMT tournament has been cancelled, but they are unsure as to when it will be rescheduled. Originally, they decided to reschedule on November 5-6 but this would put it on a collision course with the USAA Championship. So now they are considering working with the USAA in some way or finding another date. They advised to keep checking their website for the latest as they do intend to have the tournament at some date. And in another development, Stanman reports on his board today that Jack Holmes of the SKA might "reevaluate the date conflict with the OBO KMT."

KMT Schedule Crowded? You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet
With mother nature wreaking havoc on the eastern seaboard, tournament organizers are hustling to run their events or reschedule. Stanman announced on his board today that the recently rescheduled SKA events in Savannah have now been scheduled to conflict with the Onslow Bay Open September 24-26. Additionally, there's been talk that if South Brunswick has to reschedule they may move it to October 29-31 -- in conflict with the Toys for Tots tourney. Let's hope we get a nice patch of weather beginning next week and can get all the remaining events done as scheduled.

SKA Website has a New Look
The SKA updated the look and functionality of their website today. It looks really great. The design is really nice and modern without being too flashy. And the navigation bar at the top of the page allows you to easily find what you're looking for. Take a look for yourself.

South Brunswick Islands Committee Mulls what to Do with Frances Looming

For Sale -- Tournament Equipped 2002 Wellcraft… Too Late!
Here's another interesting post on kingfishconnection.com. Appears there was a 2002 Wellcraft Scarab Sport Open Center Console with Yammies for sale – perfect for the FLW Outdoors Kingfish Tour. It was posted by “Fish Dancer” Saturday morning at 10:21 AM. The very next post on the board was from Fish Dancer again saying he had sold it on Sunday at 2:23 PM. Someone just bought their team a priority entry in the FLW Tour!

Fish Dancer responds: Just to keep the FACTS straight, the Wellcraft 29 Scarab posted for sale was sold this past Sunday. However the set of assumptions posted on this site regarding the reasons for the sale posted here without our permission are incorrect. The sale of our boat was in progress well before the FLW announcement, delayed a few weeks by Hurricane Charley and the new owners will NOT be fishing her on any king mackerel tournament trail. The truth sets you free!!!!!!! JeffFishDancer, http://www.FishDancer.net. Editors Note: I had no preconcieved set of assumptions when I made this post. It was just an interesting post on a public message board and I threw in my two cents -- nothing more. Moving on.

The Kingfishconnection.com Has Results for the Frantic Atlantic
See complete results at this link. A special “atta-boy” from the Kingfish Journal to Ty Cobb for his second place finish in the Under 23 class. Ty is a Carolina Beach resident and a subscriber to the Kingfish Journal. I’m guessing a round of drinks are on the house at Cobb’s Corner today.

OBSFC Tournament #2 Results are in and it Appears Club Members Dominated the Tourney
According to Stanman’s board, David and Steve Ellsworth, on the "TKO", won the club's latest tournament. David is a member of the OBSFC. They had another good turnout and the cookout afterwards was very well attended. Plus, it appears they raised $500-$600 for the Reef Fund. The next tournament will be on Sept. 18, the week before the OBO.

Response from the SKA on the FLW Outdoors Kingfish Tour Announcement
The Kingfish Journal spoke with Bob Flocken of the SKA late on Friday for a response to the FLW’s recent introduction of a competing kingfish tour. Flocken had not yet seen the details but simply stated that it “raises the bar and provides us more incentive to produce better tournaments.” He mentioned that some teams currently on the SKA have sponsorship deals that don’t allow them to fish in events with competing sponsors. So there’s some question as to which teams will be able to fish in the FLW given their existing contracts. Flocken also confirmed Yamaha’s involvement with their pro tour for the remainder of 2004 and 2005.

Kingfish Journal Interviews Irwin Jacobs, Chairman of FLW Outdoors, on the Launch of the Wal-Mart FLW Kingfish Tour

The Kingfish Journal spoke with Irwin L. Jacobs, chairman of FLW Outdoors, today regarding their introduction of the Wal-Mart FLW Kingfish Tour. With a long history of producing big-money bass and walleye tournaments, the FLW Outdoors is embarking on their newest expansion into “bluewater.”

When asked about the motivation for this new series, Jacobs explained that fishermen tend to focus and have a strong loyalty to a particular species. And king mackerel fishermen are no exception. The FLW Outdoors has been planning for Thursday’s announcement for about 18 months. They have been quietly hiring the top experts and gathering intelligence on what’s needed to build a world-class king tournament series.

Wal-Mart has previously sponsored some boats that have participated in SKA events and through that experience they learned a lot about the current state of tournament fishing. What they determined was that an infusion of real money and strong sponsorship was needed to take king tournament fishing to the next level.

The greater goal is to grow the sport, but Jacobs was unapologetic on one point; selling boats and motors. Jacobs’s not playing with house money – he’s putting up his company’s money in hopes of increasing sales of Genmar boats (Aquasport, Hydra-Sports, Seaswirl and Wellcraft). Jacobs controls both Genmar and the FLW Outdoors. Jacobs noted, “There’s no question that we want people to be responsive to our products.” Plus, he’s mindful of the other sponsors. Wal-Mart has been the title sponsor in the bass and walleye series since 1997 and Yamaha is fully on-board for this new venture. Additional sponsors are going to be announced in 2005.

When asked about the fact that many top teams already have sponsorship deals with other manufacturers and motors, he said, “they can still participate, but the big pay day comes with our products.”

There’s been considerable interest in determining how the 100-boat field for the inaugural 2005 series will be determined. There was early talk that it was “by invitation” with priority entry to Genmar boats. Jacobs told the Kingfish Journal it would be simpler than that. He stated it would be “first-come, first-serve” based on those that applied and paid a deposit. He explained that if 150 boats applied they would accept all the Genmar entries and then fill out the remaining slots based on who had applied first. It appears for non-Genmar teams the early bird will get the worm. After the field is set, there will be a waiting list.

Jacobs was quick to add, “We hope to have more boats in future events.” Having a ten-year history in bass and walleye tournaments -- with over 75,000 anglers involved -- Jacobs said they are very capable of handling the growth that they hope occurs. He quipped, “we won’t leave anyone out on the highway.”

The FLW Outdoors bass and walleye tours have many different levels of competition. Jacobs explained it using a baseball metaphor; they provide the “big show”, a minor league and farm club opportunities. There’s talk in the industry that the SKA and other local tournaments will act as the farm clubs and minor leagues with the FLW Kingfish Tour being the big show. Asked if Thursday’s announcement was just the start of multiple king tournament tours produced by FLW Outdoors he said, “We’ll give the fishing community what they want. It will be based on the participation levels we receive. We’ll need support from all those involved and we’ll need to see that our products and sponsors are being purchased and supported.”

There has been considerable debate in the kingfish community as to how this new development will affect the SKA’s Yamaha Pro Tour. We asked Mr. Jacobs for comment on what this does to the SKA’s tour? He politely declined to make any comments regarding the SKA. He did say that he hopes the FLW Kingfish Tour will allow fisherman to “make a living, become a professional, and do what they love, just as we have done in our other events.”

Jacobs reinforced that the tour is intended to take the sport to a new level -- to bring it a larger profile. Currently FLW events have substantial television viewership. They also provide tremendous financial benefits not only to the anglers but also to local communities where tournaments are held. Plus, they are very active with the Armed Forces and plan to bring these benefits to king mackerel fishing.

Jacobs asked the Kingfish Journal to remind potential participants to bookmark the FLW Outdoors’ website (
www.flwoutdoors.com) as more details, registration specifics and on-the-water rules and regulations are coming soon.

To close the interview Mr. Jacobs noted that the FLW staff is very friendly and professional. Everyone on staff is committed to helping the sport and you can see this for yourself if you attend or participate in one of the 2005 events.

The Kingfish Journal would like to thank Mr. Jacobs for taking time to speak with us. A special thanks to Bill Petrowiak for his help in promptly and professionally setting up this interview.

Overnight Reaction to Wal-Mart FLW Atlantic Kingfish Tour Mixed
A review of the comments the Kingfish Journal has received and the community's message boards shows a mixed reaction to the latest bombshell news from FLW Outdoors. Although it seems the detractors are out in force, the Kingfish Journal suspects the serious potential participants are buring up the phones and e-mails with their team members already planning strategy and have not elected to weight in on the discussion. The reactions have ranged from, "WOW. I'm actively searching for a ride for next year's FLW Kingfish Tour" to "A big whoop-de-dang-do." One recurring theme is the strong Genmar/Yamaha support with folks asking questions like "do I have to switch boats and motors to actively participate." One telling comment mentioned "for that kind of money" a switch might be worth it. I'm sure that's the reaction Genmar and Yamaha were hoping for. There were many who wondered how the 100 boats would be chosen. And another who said with "GUARANTEED" money they might think about increasing the number of boats that can participate. That's definitely the reaction the FLW was looking for. And on the SKA's Pro tour, one king fisherman opined, "their Pro Tour is basically done for." Stop back by for more details.
